    The BEST Home Theater podcast
You can’t get any better answers about Home Theater than on this podcast. Tom and Rob and the occasional guest hosts all have experience in what makes a good theater and how to resolve the issue you may have run into. Give them a listen and you won’t be sorry.

    The best AV Podcast
Been listen for years and love their great real world advice. Of all the AV podcasts out there I appreciate their approach to get good sound with what you can afford. They don’t push the only way to get a great experience is to drop multi thousand dollars on gear. Thanks Tom and Rob keep up the great work.

    Re: episode #897
The co-host was very rude to the host discussing Saltburn…completely turned me off to the show. 👋🏻

    Fantastic AV Podcast
As an AV “newbie”, I have found this show to be both informative and entertaining. Tom and Rob have excellent rapport and have a sense of humor that I appreciate.

Seems a lot more mean spirited in past year
I’ve been listening to Tom and Rob for years and proud member of the 2+ club. But it does seem like over the past year or 2 the snark and disdain for listeners and their questions has gone from playful sarcasm to at times coming across as mean spirited. Every other segment seems pretty predictable now: listener writes in seeking legitimate knowledge, Tom makes mean and sarcastic comments about their question (often times working in a skewering at so-called audiophiles when sometimes the question isn’t “audiophile” at all), Rob laughs at Tom’s sarcasm, Tom gets serious for a moment, then rants about how dumb or stupid the question is (or again referencing his disdain of “audiophiles”) then Rob answers the question. It’s uncomfortable to listen to at times. I know it’s couched in “sarcasm” but it comes from a legitimate place of disdain - at least that’s how it seems. And I put “audiophile” in quotes because it seems the show’s definition of being an audiophile is exclusive to whackos and nut jobs who spend $5000 on speaker cables. Not all who appreciate good audio are nut jobs with $5K speaker cables. Some of us appreciate 2 channel audio without being made to feel stupid all the time. But the guys have been at it a long time so I guess they know what works for them. 2 hour plus listener signing off, Felix and Violet.

    Tom, and Rob are legend!
Tom is a riot. He’s most of the “rant” in AVRant, but we all know his true character. ;) Rob does so much work and it truly shows. The shows are very well prepared, have an excellent flow, and address so many real world solutions. I really love this format, and the chemistry between these two on the podcast. It just works, and works well. Well done guys!

    Pitcher vs picture
It’s Not even close. This is the best podcast on the subject of home theater. If you can get past Tom not being able to say the word picture, it’s a must listen every week 😜

    You are all Insane
Rob: You are an insane person. You have to understand this. It is abundantly clear you want to do this podcast and just talk for literally 2 straight hours reciting technical specifications like a malfunctioning robot. It is unlistenable. Tom: Congratulations on your deep voice. So glad you love to hear it rumble as you mutter unintelligibly into the mic dismissing every question that is asked. Also, big time props on your rad cycling hobby and all your rich friends you like to mention. So cool. Also, please never fail to mention your hard out cause your son needs to go to practice wife needs the car or whatever. Love hearing it. Love it. The same 6 people who write in asinine questions every week: Stop. For the love of god and all that is holy, STOP. John from the Philippines, Infinite Gary, Garinder, the guy making the dumb giant subwoofer. Please stop. Nobody believes you have enough money to constantly be buying $11k worth of new speakers and receivers every month. You psychos. And if you do have that kind of disposable income, donate it to a children’s hospital or something. Jesus. I came to this podcast cause I’ve been trying to gain knowledge on building my home theater and am very interested in this stuff now. But AV Rant has made me insane after listening to it for a few months now. It’s psychotic. These people are all insane. I can’t take it anymore. I’ll save everyone the trouble: Acoustically treat your room with GIK panels and bass traps Get a Denon or a Marantz receiver Kef, Focal or Hyperion speakers. There. That’s everything you will learn from this podcast. The rest is purely autistic circle jerking. Avoid.

    Could be great
These guys are knowledgeable and I really enjoy the parts of the show where they answer questions and give advice to listeners. Why only 2 stars? - 1* for Rob’s constant giggling and laughing. It’s so distracting. I’ve even heard him chuckle at serious comments which is disconcerting. I understand it’s probably a form of a nervous tick but maybe if he reads this he’ll be more aware and try to tone it down. - 1* for the terrible corny jokes. I don’t tune in for a comedy act. The info and advice is their bread and butter. The 30 second skip feature in the podcast app has never been more handy - 1* for the terrible mix. For an AV focused show the mix is really bad. Tom mumbles quite a bit and then when they laugh at themselves your ears will get blown out. I will gladly change my rating if these things are addressed. If not, I’ll continue to use that :30 skip to get to the good stuff.

    Genuinely Helpful
Are they the best in the industry? Do they have inside knowledge? No but guess what they are still amazing. Great information, two podcasters which makes it easier to listen to. Tom is a little snarky but he means well. They are human beings so if they mal a mistake let them know and they will address it. Love you guys!

    Real talk for home A/V
Tom, Rob and Lee give an earnest and genuine take on home A/V. They’re not out to sell you anything. As of recent note, they often recommend not spending too much. If you have questions about building, setting up, or tweaking your home A/V system, then give this podcast a listen.

No snake oil, no gold plated unicorn horn shavings
If you want real information without the exotic nonsense then this Q&A Show is the winner. There are plenty of people that will pander to the masses but Tom, Rob and Lee are not them. They recommend what is needed and avoid unnecessary spend but will happily allow for people to splurge but be educated .

    Great AV Advice
I am always impressed by the detailed advice on home theater and audio products. You can get a lot of manufacturer specific information (such as settings on a Marantz receiver to pass through an HDR signal through HDMI). I bought the Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2ex bookshelf speaker based on Rob's comments on the Sierra 2 that he owns. One of the best home theater purchases that I have ever made. You may not always agree with their opinions and advice but at least I know that they are straight shooters. Highly recommended if you need AV help or want to educate yourself on the topic.

Why do I keep listening to this?
These guys don’t seem to know what they’re talking about yet try to give advice like they know everything. Their subwoofer setup is laughably bad and hearing them talk about technical stuff like group delay differences in ported and sealed subs not making a difference when trying to integrate the two is just down right ignorant. Yes you can’t detect group delay in low frequencies but you can certainly detect bass waves cancelling each other out due to drastically different group delays down low between ported and sealed. This podcast is a joke at best.

Best Q&A Podcast about Home Theater in the World
This is the real deal. These guys have been steeped in home theater technology for a couple decades. And they have learned where to spend money for great audio video name where to not waste money on snake oil. Tom is a published reviewer, and "the funny one" -- and the inspriation for the podcast title, because sometimes he gets creative and goes off the deep end on a RANT -- while Rob is the scientist, mathematician and (more) polite Canuk. What is very cool is that you email or tweet an AV question to them ("what TV should i buy for my living room that costs under $1000?" or "How do I set the crossover for my subwoofer?" or "What are room treaments and why would I want some?") and they will tell you -- both in plain english AND in scientific detail. They also cover some AV and entertainment news and throw in a little personal bantor, as well, to keep things lively. If you want to learn more about home theater, this is the podcast for you. There's nothing else like it on the internet.

What you really have is money envy
It seems to me when listening to your podcast that you have an aversion to spending money for audio equipment whatever happened to the old adage you get what you pay for you can’t get good stuff on the cheap. II realize that you’re young and don’t have much disposable income so you have to compensate for that that’s all well and good but don’t try to tell me that when you buy something cheap it’s better than something more expensive there are many things other than sound quality that qualifies the product to be considered high-end such as build quality ease-of-use and longevity of the Products and pride of ownership all of these things together make a product better and worth the price in my opinion I also think you should pay more attention to some of the older hi-fi reviewer’s maybe you might learn a thing or two As opposed to just arbitrarily dismissing what they say these guys of been in the business for a long time most of most of them longer than you’ve been on the earth so maybe you should pay attention

Love the non nonsense and practical approach from the hosts. Tune in. Learn something. Boom!

    Dour Tom and Chuckling Rob.
Valuable audio information and reviews, with a lot of repetition. Podcast would be half as long if they edited out Rob's empty chuckles and Toms "I mean", "you knows".

AV Rant is a weekly ritual.
Tom Andry and Rob H. really do a great job with this podcast. Each week, they start with a little banter, a brief review of the latest AV news, and then they dive into AV questions submitted by listeners. Questions center on projectors, receiver and processor setup, speaker placement, and all things home theater. Rob is has an encyclopedic knowledge of home theater technology and is brilliant (I sound like a fanboy but don’t say that lightly). Refreshingly, these guys are not audio snobs and routinely advise their listeners to temper their AV purchasing decisions. For me, the podcast has become a weekly ritual and makes my commutes endurable. Thanks guys and keep up the great work.

    Rob is GREAT
Tom and Rob have a great podcast with lots of good info. I love the way they don't get sucked into those crazy product claims like $5000 cables etc

    Your questions answered
Appropriately name podcast; I love when Tom goes off on a rant. While both hosts are very knowledgeable, Rob goes the extra mile when preparing for the show.

    Entertaining and Informative
I've been listening to this show for a little over two years. I look forward to teh podcast each week. Tom and Rob have a great dynamic and make the show very entertaining. I've learned a ton over teh past two years (2 subwoofers!!!). They are honest, don't sugar coat things, and don't promote snake oil products. They care about all their listeners and take the time to answer their questions, even if they answered a similar one the week before. You don't get treated that way on the forums. I can't recommend this show enough.

    Great podcast.
I listen to this podcast as soon as it downloads. Tom and Rob are an absolute blast, and give great advice on how to get the most bang for your buck, and much much more for your home theatre. Keep up the good work guys.

    Entertaining home theater podcast
Tom and Rob host an entertaining podcast all about the acoustic interference of orca whales in submarine equipment. Really fascinating stuff. Just kidding, two knowledgeable guys talking about home theater and answering questions and comments from listeners.

    First ever review
I recently was searching for a new podcast to compliment home theater geeks which is a good show but I needed something more and AV Rant is it. I love this show I even started listening to the previous shows. Tom is funny as hell with his sarcastic remarks. Rob H. is very technical which is what I wanted in a home theater show he gets down to the nitty gritty details which I love. This is one of the Best podcast I listen too even trumps home theater geeks in my point of view

If I Was Stuck On A Desert Island...
And could only listen to one home theater podcast, AVRant would be the one I would listen to. Very in-depth with plenty of light hearted humor as well.

This is by far the best AV podcast I've heard. It's focused on listener questions and the hosts are extremely knowledgeable. Give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.
  • Bandman1984
    Very entertaining and educational
It's much more than just two AV dudes talking. Tom and Rob really seem to care about helping their listeners get the most out of their audio systems. Really enjoy this!!

    Always informative and entertaining
Love the show and the new question and answer format works really well.
  • Hamster7777
I love learning from this show
I simply can't wait each week for this show. Didn't know I had so much more to learn, and these guys make it fun. Soooo many Q&A shows give vague, shallow answers. These guys stive to give meaningful, useful, thoughtful answers to each question. Highly recommended for those just starting with AV and for those looking techniques to up their game.

My favorite podcast. Best tech podcast!!
I have listened to Tom's podcast over the past 6 or so years. This is the one podcast that I anxiously await each week. When I see my Downcast app downloading a the new episode, its like Christmas morning. The format has changed over the years. It use to be more of a morning-show of audio-visual with Tom (as the AV expert) and a female (non-AV expert, but funny). Now, its more off an odd-couple format with Tom and Rob (who was an active contributor and now a host.) Tom is the one who rants about the idiosyncrasies and quirks of the AV and home theater industry (and is very good at his rants), whereas Rob is the more straight forward, non-ranter. They work very very well together because of this. The format is now a Q&A of listener questions... most of which we all have wanted to ask at some point. Even if you have no interest about an individual question, its still funny to listen to Tom rant about some aspect of the issue. I also like the HT Guys podcast, but they are more basic as per their information and target those new to the hobby. Tom and Rob, in my opinion, target the enthusiasts - but also answer entry-level questions (when asked). This podcast (AV Rant) will cover much more advanced home theater topics and setups. If you are in to tech podcasts, this is the one to get.
  • Nola040511
    great home theater podcast!
They are great at relating technical jargon into terms that the common person can understand and use to get the most out of their home theater equipment.

A helping of audio knowledge with a side of snark
Tom and Rob do a great job of distilling complex audio concepts into something useful for people trying to get the best quality out of their A/V gear. If you want to get your question answered, or just learn something you should tune in.
  • JRoJamz
Great for Noobs and Leets alike
This is a great resource for all. Looking to get into home theater? They have you covered. Have a home theater you want to upgrade? Done. Don't care about home theater, but want to stay current on streaming, gadgets, movie/audio news in general? This is the joint right here.
  • maclick
I think its called Rant for a Reason.
I really like the podcast. Sure they ramble a little and get of topic, but its a Rant. To me it seems to be a podcast for the person with a nice Hi-Fi in his small living room to the guy with the "Theater Room" with all the bells and whistles.
  • Morgan313
    Boring
Rob H. Should be the host. Tom Andry I think he just likes to here himself talk, always going off topic, about what he believes is right,WHO CARES. I tried to get in to it, Just can't
  • artvr4
    Show rocks!!!!!
    Tom and Liz are Awsome!!!!!!
  • AV Addict
    Falling off
This podcast has really fallen off. It was one of my most anticipated each week. Since December it feels like more rant has been added each week at the expense of the AV, which to me is the foundation this podcast should be built on. The name of the show implies that ranting is part of the gig and I appreciated that bit of fun and how it made this podcast special, but the rants should be rants related to AV, not cats and fireworks in the background. Less focus on the hosts book would also be nice. Tom, Liz, and the rants are all great, but there needs to be a renewed focus on AV to turn this podcast around.
  • gnome.roller
    All Rant, Not Much AV
Do not listen unless you enjoy hosts that complain about everything that has nothing to do with AV.
  • Caveman1
    Not enough AV
    Too much off-topic banter.
  • xego
    Doin' my portion
It has been appropriately dubbed "The Morning Show of Podcasts," and it fills that niche very well. There are plenty of other podcasts that can keep the "tech and spec" nice and dry for you and if that, and your second cup of coffee are what keep you going for your morning commute then god love you the world needs engineers too. For the rest of us who have been acclimated to the kind of chemistry that made "Howard and Robin" and enduring favorite for many years will appreciate a similar flavor in AVrant, a podcast with a cynical cake and a creamy geek-centric filling.
  • Gonzlobo
    Enjoyable
I enjoy this podcast. Sure the topics go off topic from time to time & the co-host doesn't add to the technical discusion, but both add to its appeal. Tom isn't afraid to rant about things he doesn't like, thus the name of the show.

    Had to unsubscribe
I heard about podcast through 'HD Guys".I like Tom Andry and his rants but could not see why Dina Clarke is even on the show ,she brings nothing to the table.I tried to hang in there hoping the podcast would get better over time. Finally had to unsubscribe ,needs to focus more on subject.I listen to many podcasts a day, this one seems to wander to much for me.I'm hoping the new show "After dark' with the 'HD Guys" will be a success.
