Bone Valley

In 1987, 18-year-old Michelle Schofield was found dead in a phosphate pit in Florida. Two years later, her husband Leo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Fifteen years later, previously unidentified fingerprints matched Jeremy Scott--a violent teenager who lived nearby. Jeremy has since confessed to Michelle’s murder.

In this groundbreaking podcast, Bone Valley host Gilbert King uncovers startling new evidence that Jeremy is responsible for a string of murders. King is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Devil in the Grove, which led to the exonerations of four innocent men.

Bone Valley is a production of Lava for Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. No1.

    Great podcast
Riveting story. I can’t even explain how much empathy I felt for a cold blooded killer. This was one of the best podcasts I have ever listened to.

    Wow incredible
The first season of this podcast was very well done, but somehow the second season was even better. The humanization of Jeremy and his redemption is a truly beautiful story. It’s amazing that in such a horrible situation forgiveness and grace ultimately prevails. Leo’s prayers for Jeremy are working.

    The best of the best.
Incredible investigating and storytelling. I started listening for the true crime narrative, and I’ve stayed because Gilbert and team capture the complexity of the human experience in every episode.

    Great Podcast
This is by far one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to and I’ve listened to a bunch of them. Gilbert and Kelsey show such compassion to everyone involved. They are beautiful people! I’m so glad Leo is finally out and enjoying his family! He is a beautiful soul!!! Victoria Avalon should be ashamed of herself! She did the justice system a disservice!Looking for more from Gilbert and Kelsey!

Hands down the best podcast out there!
I can’t even put into words what a beautiful and captivating podcast this is! It’s just phenomenal. From Gilbert’s & his teams work to get Leo out of jail and now hearing Jeremy and his son’s story of reconnecting. I have shed tears of joy and sorrow many times. If I could only recommend one podcast for the rest of my life, it would be this one!

    Absolute MUST LISTEN
I listen to a good deal of true crime podcasts, both short single episode stories and long form like this one and I don’t think I’ve ever heard one that moved me emotionally the way this one has. It sounds like there are many people who’ve been pulled in and emotionally invested in this story just as I have. And it may be even more so now with the second season. Listen! It’s WORTH IT.

I’d give this podcast 10 stars
How does this podcast just keep getting better? Gilbert King, you are an incredible writer and human being. Thank you for sharing this story with us.

    Full Circle
Once in while a rare incredible individuals (Mr. King, Leo,etc) can bring together people one by one out of the most traumatic and unusual circumstances. The past can’t be changed however the future is yet to be written. While some souls may be too far gone, it’s exciting to see “the good parts” of a soul who still yearn to have their human needs met. And the rest we pour out to God to “lead us, guide us,walk beside us, and help us find the way”. In the end he’ll make things right.

    Bone Valley
Murder, lies, conspiracy, redemption, love & forgiveness. This is one of the most powerful and devastatingly beautiful stories. I can't find the words for it all. There's so much in these 2 seasons all wrapped up in so many emotions. I have cried so many tears from the sheer rawness of it all. But, the redemption...The love...The forgiveness...it's breathtaking. Some of it will anger and infuriate you, frustrate you and stress you out. And some will make you weep. But, in the end, you're given the gift of knowing what grace truly means.

    Amazing
I didn’t start Season 2 right away assuming it couldn’t be as compelling as Season 1. But here I am feeling empathy and rooting for Jeremy. The killer. The reason Leo was in prison. This is so well done.

    Positively Outstanding!!!!!
This is quite possibly the BEST podcast I’ve listened to and I have listened to A LOT of them!! If you’re looking for something to binge, this is perfect. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Overwhelming
This podcast had me so emotionally involved. I felt the emotions. I hurt listening to the courts deny an innocent man. It breaks my heart the judicial system failed in doing their job. It’s so I fail to hear how long Leo spent in jail. It should have been that way. But then I hear how positive he was and is and how he kept pushing forward. I’m sure he had some awful days but the fact that he had hope and just purposed in his heart to Love Jesus and continue to be the best he could be amazed me! On the last episode when he got to the Noah house and the lady said “Look at God” I got tears in my eyes and chills went all over me. I could feel the spirit and I know from the recording everyone else in that moment did too! Thank you so much for producing this podcast. I do pray and look forward to the day that Leo is exonerated!! 🙌🏼

    12/10 Recommend
Unexpected and absolutely heart-wrenching. I never thought I’d feel this way about prison inmates I’ve never met, but Bone Valley changed that. Jeremy never stood a chance—his horrific childhood and desperate need for mental help broke my heart. I found myself crying and genuinely grieving the loss of someone I never knew. And then there’s Leo. Not only did he lose his wife—he lost his entire life to a wrongful conviction. It’s devastating to see how prosecutors and DAs cared more about protecting their image than admitting they got it so tragically wrong. He is paying the price for their pride. Gilbert and Kelsey did a remarkable job bringing light to such a painful miscarriage of justice. Their storytelling was compassionate, thorough, and deeply moving. This podcast is more than just true crime—it’s a powerful plea for humanity, truth, and reform. Lord, help our judicial system.

    Meri West
Outstanding podcast that, in so many ways, restores my belief that truth, decency, and good always prevail. In terms of Jeremy Scott, while there can be no doubt that his wrongs were heinous, they have to be properly judged in context with his upbringing and psychological factors. Please, please let Meri West know that I am so happy that people like her exist. She is an amazing soul.

This episode (season 2, episode 5) stopped me in all I was doing. What an incredible human Meri is. And Leo & Kelsey, the narration and music adds depth to this emotional episode. Thank you. We need more of these moments while the world is swirling around us.

Why are you glossing over the fact that Leo would hit Michelle??? Isn’t that true ?

    Excellent
This series is excellent and beyond heartbreaking and maddening. Absolutely heartbreaking to see how poor police/prosecutor/judges/system can DESTROY lives.

    Incredible story telling
I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a podcast. The journalists did an incredible job telling an unbelievably painful story. And the corruption by the state of Florida…..unreal. My heart goes out to Leo and his family for a lifetime of injustice.

    EXCEPTIONAL!!
This was hands-down the best story I’ve listened to. And I have listened to many. I never once got bored. Never once thought it was just too redundant. I actually anticipated every next piece. I didn’t sleep much and focused solely on this story for hours upon hours until it was completely listened to. Thank you so much for strongly opening peoples eyes to the “Justice System” here in the United States. How is this anything but horribly wrong to have someone CONFESS yet because the department that put the wrong man in prison doesn’t want to be embarrassed or admit they were wrong WHILE RUINING SO MANY LIVES!!! Every single person in the sheriffs department or police department that had a hand in situations like this should be brought to their own justice. Without a doubt. When will they learn about accountability? They are the professionals? Who people are supposed to trust, respect and admire? Not these days. Very sad indeed. Again, WELL DONE. YOU NAILED IT🤍🤍🤍 ~ArA oWeNs, MiSsOuLa, Mt

Great reporting but theme music is off
This was some thorough investigative journalism and a well made podcast, but the theme music did not match the topic and the intensity of the script. The theme song, however, was awesome.

I listen to soooo much true crime and this podcast is just so well done. It brought out raw emotion in me and gave me a different view of what humanity can be. Who knew I could have empathy for a serial killer?

Must listen. One of the best
This podcast was one of, if not the best ever listened to. Great storytelling. Gripping content. Emotional and engaging. Objective to the point possible. Traumatic story. You have to listen to the entire series. Great job Gilbert and Kelcey. Feels like we know you both and the characters of focus.

Lies, truth and everything in between...
Wow. I have never listened to anything as powerful as this story. I cried. I smiled. I laughed. I found myself, numerous times, standing still in the middle of my living room with ear pods in, covered in chills, overwhelmed with emotion and sometimes pure and utter SHOCK. The arrogance displayed from all ends of the Florida justice system will leave you floored. Their egos left me baffled and lead to unethical behaviors that cannot go ignored. King and his team do a phenomenal job…from research, building lasting relationships to telling this true story from the past into real time, well done. Thank you to every person that brought this story to life in the real world. And to Leo…thank you for never letting the system trick you into settling. For never wavering on the facts and standing your ground. You will hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life, and I’m sure that is the same for many in this world. Thank you Leo.

    Best Podcast Ever
This was the most amazing podcast I’ve ever listened to. I will have to think back on it for years, and strive to have the strength of so many of the people that are featured- I don’t want to spoil anything, but the sadness that I felt for Leo and Michelle was so raw, and then we get into the story of Jeremy, and I grieve for another life essentially lost. And clearly Justin’s mom is such an incredible person, and passed her compassion and understanding down to her son. Even in her pain she raised such a special young man. Leo’s strength, patience, thoughtfulness, and ability to forgive is incredible and so admirable. And of course Judge Scott Cupp, whose dedication to justice outweighed his career ambitions. Too many heroes in this story to count. Life is so unpredictable, and full of unexpected tragedies and blessing and angels, and I feel like that’s what this this podcast is really about. Wishing everyone involved all the best in life.

I just have to comment I think it’s hilarious how so many of these podcasters comment on confederate flags like somehow you must be dangerous if you have one.

Podcast was good but then you read online about all the incriminating info they left out, can’t anyone just make an unbiased podcast ?

    Wonderful
This podcast is so well done. This should be the standard in which all other podcasts have to measure up to. Gilbert has an easy voice to listen to and has such a gift to make this story come alive. I enjoyed this immensely. Thank you for your amazing work on this case!

    Gut wrenching
This is addicting to listen to. Still making my way through season 1. I’m so glad I stumbled on this podcast, even though it repeatedly breaks my heart. My heart hurts so much for Leo and i’m absolutely disgusted with our justice system.

Gilbert King is the king of podcasts!
Amazing podcast! One of the best I have yet to listen to! Gilbert King delivers such a compassionate, honest, educated and caring voice to this podcast! I hope there are more seasons to come with his true crime stories!

    Captivating
I happened to click on this podcast and couldn’t put it down. I am the same age as Michelle would have been. Leo’s innocence is blaring throughout the telling of his story. The fact that Leo comes out the other side with love, compassion and resiliency is nothing short of a miracle. Amazing detective work, writing, delivering the story, and perseverance to Gilbert and Kelsey. Best wishes to Leo and his family.

    Great podcast
Wonderful story telling. I couldn’t stop listening.
  • Injustice Survivor
    Heartfelt and emotional
One of the most touching podcasts that I've listened to. Leo is one of the cases that made me take a look at our justice system and after nearly learning a similar fate due to lies and corruption decided to return to school and study law. If not for our local law school and their support and dedication I wouldn't be where I am today. I intend to represent those who cannot afford proper presentation and fight for the wrongly convicted. If you need ideas for another season I highly recommend looking into Keith Zon Doolin’s case as that is the other case that still today gives me nightmares and makes me question if teaching our children to be helpful and good Samaritans is a good thing or not. It made me question what I should tell my sons to do if they see a woman or women possibly in danger and what the right advice is to give. I know they say innocent people shouldn't worry but in fact, innocent people should essentially be more concerned about injustices, without physical evidence, circumstantial evidence is all in the way that one perceives it and that can be a tricky and dangerous game to play. And the state all too often agrees to admit that they made a mistake. The same thing happened with Keith, another heinous murder led to a confession and the inability to get it admitted into evidence after not 1 but 2 suicides. Keith is on Death Row and I fear that California will never right this wrong and sickening injustice. Keep up the amazing work that you're doing!! You changed a lot of lives with your podcast and gave us the raw and emotional aspects of what you're doing. I hope you truly know what a blessing you have been for so many people and families.

    Best sequel ever!!
Gilbert, you are not just a writer, not just a podcaster, you are an incredible human! This is a wonderful story filled with imperfect individuals who perfectly intertwine through a horrific event to fill each other with hope, faith and love. It is a story that matters, a story that is worth telling and thankfully you are a brilliant storyteller. You start with the facts, the evidence and then you sprinkle the humanity of it all! Thank you to Leo for being a beautiful example of true christianity and brotherly love. Thank you to Jeremy for being raw and vulnerable and for never giving excuses for his past transgressions but rather for taking responsibility and facing them head on. Thank you to Justin for his desire to know his father albeit with fear but with an empathetic heart and no judgment at all. In the podcast Leo said that his hope was that Jeremy came to know true and genuine love, the kind he may have never experienced. This is my hope as well! God bless you all as you have blessed others with your story! Thank you!
