As a professional philosopher, I’m equipped to appreciate the quality of Cliff’s work: intelligent and lovingly prepared. I’m especially impressed by the overview of Plato’s Republic, which does justice without getting (too) lost in the weeds. Thank you!

I switched from Apple Music to Spotify recently and started listening to podcasts there as well. During the episode “Plato’s Republic 6” and the part with the discussion of the soul, I was absolutely tickled by what I believe must have been a reference to Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I can’t think of another context where I’ve heard “boy’s soul” and “boy’s hole” confused for comedic purposes. That was the push I needed to come all the way back from Spotify to the apple podcast app and leave a review. I think the name of this show is incredibly clever and as someone who is living unemployed in his high school bedroom with a 2019 vintage political science degree, I find the perspectives in this show incredibly refreshing after 4 frustrating years of my complaints in political theory classes about the incompatibility of these abstract ideas with lived political reality falling on deaf ears.

Fantastic podcast and a brilliant host.

My roommate and I have a ritual where we grab some wine and listen to this excellent podcast every time a new epi gets released. It’s interesting, relevant, and feels very inviting for philosophy newbies like myself.

Makes my lectures on the Apology superfluous!

Stumbled upon this pod in a search for “Plato’s Apology.” Had just read it and wanted some analysis. Found a few pods where host was essentially just reading a summary of the Apology through a tinny microphone before finding Good in Theory. I’ve learned more about what was happening in Athens at the time of Socrates’ trial, who Socrates was, and other helpful context. And the production value is solid. As I continue to work my way through Plato and then onto Aristotle and beyond, I hope that Good in Theory will keep pumping out thoughtful philosophical analysis. Thank you.

Fantastic podcast that contextualizes political theory in the historical world in which it lived. Good In Theory pod takes you on a journey through history, politics and the philosophy that shapes our world today. It’s a great escape you won’t feel guilty about listening to.

I sure enjoyed immersing into this podcast so far - a welcome escape from pandemic blues and you feel smarter (or more ignorant) and a little bit dreamy. I like the focus on characters and their stories, not pretentious and vivid and imaginative.

I majored in politics and philosophy at university but feel a little rusty after all these years. I’d like to brush up during these politically and ideologically charged times, but — not gonna lie — I don’t have the time or attention span to reread all my old books. That’s where Clif comes in: articulate, funny and whip smart, he has a rare gift for making philosophy accessible and entertaining without dumbing it down. Best of all, he explains why it‘a relevant today, making “Good in Theory” a must-listen for anyone interested in thinking about our past, present and future in something more than sound bites.

Amazingly insightful and accessible guide to the history of political philosophy. Loved the episodes on Plato’a Apology. Brings these enigmatic but vitally important books a bit closer to us, and us a bit closer to them.
