Look Out, Sir! Warhammer 40k Podcast

Games #190

At its most basic, the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" is a fortnightly Games Workshop podcast where two long-time friends who have collectively spent far too much of their limited time on this planet collecting, painting, playing small toy soldiers get together over the internet and talk about their crippling addiction to Warhammer and Warhammer Accessories. So, if that sounds like something you might be into, why not give it a listen? You never know, it might just become your favourite podcast. You'll never know for sure until you try.

Still reading? Want to know more about the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast"? Um... alright... what else can we tell you.

Listeners of the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" consistently tell hosts Dan and Phil that they like the fact it's two mates talking about their shared fondness of Warhammer. They say it's like being down the pub with your pals talking about something you're collectively passionate about. They also like how Dan and Phil represent a more general hobbyist vibe. Dan's a bit more try-hard at gaming than Phil and Phil spend more time painting stuff then Dan does. It's a good mixture.

Parents like to listen along with their children as the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" is one of the few out there where the hosts are seemingly able to not consistently F and Jeff every few words. Which won't seem that impressive until you meet and chat with Dan in person somewhere. He swears like a sailor the naughty boy. But when it comes to the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast", the hosts are often cheeky, but never blue.

"Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" is advertising free. Dan and Phil decided a few episodes in that they can't be doing with advertising and that they're no good at talking to guests who are only really appearing on the Pod to plug something to the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" audience. Bar the bit of blurb in the 5 Star Review Section where we tell you about our own Merchandise and Patreon, you won't be getting advertised to.

Please note this statement is true on the assertion we haven't accidentally added some copyright claimed material to the Pod which has resulted in that materials rightful owner claiming ad revenue via adding ads to said Pod. Also... we might change our minds about this at some point in the future. But if and when we do, you shouldn't be seeing this message.

I can only assume that if you're reading this bit, you either really like the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast" or you really dislike the "Look Out, Sir! Warhammer Podcast". Hopeful it's the former of the two options, and assuming it is, thanks for supporting the Pod! We hugely appreciate your support and hope that you continue to enjoy the show.

A delightful podcast for a grimdark world
I wait with anticipation every two weeks for this podcast to drop. Hosts Dan and Phil are lovely people with fantastic senses of humor. I almost feel like I know them, having learned so much about their hobby adventures and their inside jokes. In a gaming culture that often feels too serious and competitive, Phil and Dan keep things light, focusing on fun, the joys of painting and playing, and the camaraderie at 40K events. I appreciate their hot takes on new developments in the game, and their commentary whether the designers are getting it right or wrong as they the update the rules and models. All in all, this is a delightful podcast for the grim darkness of the far future.

    Love the Show!
Fairly new to Warhammer, and I have been loving your Content updates for the story of 40K and what’s going on with changes to the game and miniatures, you’ve easily become my favorite Warhammer podcast.

    Apple podcast from the americas
Wanted to leave a five star review from apple casts from America so Phil could finally get one right. But also the deserve five stars, for being able about 40K for 4 hours and making it entertaining. Even though Dan wants to change the logo bc he hates it.

    Why I love your podcast
I love all your content and your great sense of humor. I especially love your Astra militarum content and I listen to them over and over!

How a WH40K friendship made podcast helped an immigrant to build some ground
Cheers, guys! I'm pretty sure that if you produced a podcast about plumbing, I would listen to it. Your friendship and camaraderie is a wonderful vessel for spreading almost any content, but especially one related to a positive culture around the Warhammer hobby. I'm very grateful for your podcast because it helped me reconnect with Warhammer 40K and explore other related games during my process of settling down as a Latin American (Venezuelan) immigrant in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. I'm not playing as often as I like, but I've met a few great people in my local area. It's good to know this is a game and just a game and your show offers different ways to appreciate and to become a real hobbyst, which is the best engagement for me: The mix among the narrative aspects, the kitbashing possibilities and enjoying the matches. I got to know the game in 7th edition, living in the Caribbean latitudes, so I'm really excited about your stories, knowing WH40k since you were kids. It's fascinating how this cultural product, commercial pop fandom, can be seen as modern English folklore, perhaps? Playing with the fictional sense of proximity that the media podcast provides, I want to say: Dan: I can understand your polemical desire to see WH40k move forward, but leave Abaddon untouched. I don't understand your unhappiness with the deployment rules for unit rotation. Phil: Just keep doing what you do, being a master hobbyist, providing design and lore input, and being a wire to earth for Dan, especially in balancing his competitive player drive. I believe now I can end this five stars review. Regards guys.

Does Heretical Magic get you a five star review?
As a recently reunited player, I’ve been listening to Dan and Phillip and have enjoyed their take on all things WH40k, even if the 4 hour episodes are a marathon. But the bit they improvised around magic, Imperium stage magicians, and a cohort of battle mimes being able to mime light cover into existence made me laugh so much I nearly had a car accident and so I felt obliged to mention this in the 5 Star Review section.

The Perfect Mix of Funny and Crunchy
I’m always excited to see another “Look Out, Sir!” episode pop up in my podcast app, because I know I’m in for (several) hours worth of Warhammer 40k news of the day, with delightful intersections of 80s pop culture (“Eerie, Indiana”, anyone?). A new codex is complicated business, but Dan and Phil are here to slog along with us. I’m primarily a Kill Team player (which they keep mentioning they want to cover), but for me keeping up on Big-40k is like “bring your child to work day”; I’ll get there eventually, but for now I’ll just watch. “Look out, Sir!” always manages to keep the grimdark calm and accessible.

A wonderful way to while time away
An enjoyable listen with Phil and his chum Dan as they discuss the community, share their insights as long time players, yell at clouds and generally make you feel at home. My only complaint is that it always feels like it's over too soon.

    America sends its regards…
This has become one of my short list of go to Warhammer podcasts. I love that this is just two mates sharing hot takes and not getting bogged down in “metas” or “the competitive scene” or “excelling at life in any meaningful way”. Keep bringing your truths, gentlemen, and I will keep bringing my ears.

Was Good, tailing down because of one host constantly whining
Love the general feel of the cast, but the higher voiced host REALLY kills any enjoyment by going on long winded tirades and conspiracy theories about how GW is going to “get you” by changing books and game editions. We get it. You don’t like 9th. Yes, we know there is bloat. You feel there is powercreep. Okay. Can we talk about fun stuff and you can stop crapping on the hobby I enjoy because I don’t play the way you do? Also whines about oddball happenings. The dice roll where they roll man. Deal with it. You’re a man, grow up.

    U got a Purdy mouth
Funny, insightful and time killing podcast. How much more do you need in a 40k podcast?!?!?!? And they talk real purdy like.
  • BingoBongo323
Thank god! Finally, a podcast worth listening to.
Philip and Dan make an excellent pair in this can’t miss podcast. Two mates enjoying their hobby and discussing all things 40K, what’s not to love? They have just the right amount of passion, knowledge, and irreverence for the hobby to make the podcast both educational and entertaining. Their approach makes the hobby very…approachable I suppose. Approachable for beginners but it certainly has enough substance and meat to sate even the most seasoned old hat players. If you only have time for one 40K podcast this should be it, no questions. My only critique would be not enough talk of my personal favorite faction, Necrons. But, other than that, 10 oughta 10. Magnificent podcast.

    Cor, Blimey!
I’ve been searching for a 40K podcast to listed to while at work and while painting. Most all of them annoy me or bore me into tuning out. This one is both tolerable and amusing. Dan and Phil cover the hobby with the right amount of pleasure and disdain. Best 40K podcast! I hope Dan breaks down and plays Crusade (and maybe Mordheim) with Phil.

    Magic is Heresy
The strangest part of writing this review is that I've wrote it with Dan's voice narrating already. Curious as to what possible podcasts in the realm of Warhammer exist? I've perused them all, and can tell you, yes indeed, look. no. further. These Princes of the Wargaming Community, Dan and Phil are the genuine article. They deliver something special, like the satisfation of a sip of tea at *just* the right temperature..... A truely friendly and cheerful atmosphere producing a magical charm I hope I can reflect back to them here today with this review! Thanks guys, never tire! But if you do, that's ok too. 5 Stars!

    Getting on late doors
Hello gents, Started playing 40K after playing Vermintide this summer, even though that is Sigmar. So I did not start listening to your show “early doors.” Did I use that correctly? As an American, I am very unaware of how the actual world speaks. So far I have played fewer hours of Warhammer than I have spent listening to your show. It is very informative and entertaining. I appreciate that you approach it from a hobby side and a tournament side. Also as I used to listen when in an office, appreciate that you don’t swear. Keep up the good work and maybe one day I will get to play again. Pod reviews for the pod god, Dwayne

I feel like one of the chaps
Much love from across the pond, I love listening to these guys go back and forth about all aspects of the 40k hobby. Their style of conversational podcast is something I don’t much enjoy usually, but something about this one just makes me feel like I’m at the bar with some friends. You make my daily commute just a whole lot better. Thank you for everything you do! Also, started a Minotaurs army about a month ago, what’s the over under on getting them table top ready before Philip?

    Good company while painting
If your interested in Warhammer 40k it’s a great listen and the episodes are long enough to settle into a nice rhythm and get a lot painted As a Slayer Sword and an 8 time Gold Golden Demon painter I endorse these guys I will be adding Look Out Sir to my Patreon subscriptions Tim Holly - G1StyleMPDesign on Instagram

To whom it may be concerned,
I work in the hospitality industry and have had to work through the entirety of the pandemic. This podcast is something I look forward to on my 45 minute commute to and from work. The rambling nature is quite soothing and I feel like I am just hanging out with some “good ole boys” shooting the proverbial shot. Would recommend and have! 5 stars.

    Great podcast
Fun podcast. They keep up on the big 40k releases and somehow make talking about 40k for 2+ hours not ever get boring.

    A Revelatory Experience
Back in April I inherited a Grey Knight(?) army from 2007, and have been thinking about painting it up and possibly even trying to play 9th edition, but after listening to many episodes, and episode 93 in particular, I realized that 40k and many aspects of its fandom aren’t for me, and I’ve instead invested in some Necromunda stuff so my friends and I can start playing. In the meantime, I have tons of bolters and chainswords to use on my gangers. Dan and Phil both have very candid and interesting discussions about the hobby, and I’m happy to live vicariously thru their 40k discussions until the time comes to paint space marines.

Not the Beatles, more akin to Blur
These lads have found the perfect blend of rambling and informative that one demands for a 5 star review. I have often heard references to a mysterious 3rd host from the days of yore, but as I have not seen or heard the one they call “Joe”, I can only assume that he is a figment of their collective imaginations. I would recommend this podcast if you like witty banter, a dry sense of humor, and Warhammer 40K. Keep up the good work guys.

    Best 40K Podcast By Far!
Dan! Phil! Look at you go, yet another review from across the pond. You’ve made it. Seriously gents thank you for being such a welcoming listen to the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium. Each week I look forward to Phil’s Minotaur update, can’t wait to see the finished product in 75 years, and Dan’s poetic turn of phrase - I always find myself saying “mate” and “innit” post listen. This is by far the best 40K podcast. Thank you fellas for putting in the work to bring us a bit entertainment and good fun. *Bonus points if you read this with an American accent. Bonus bonus points if Phil’s American accent is better than his Ork accent.

The perfect 40k podcast experience! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve only begun listening recently and have already sped through many of the available episodes. Dan and Phil are the perfect mix of competitive and casual gamers. Seemingly in it to have a good time and not taking themselves too seriously. The podcast feels very much like going down to the local hobby store and engaging in a couple hours of conversation with your pals/mates! I’ve finished many painting projects while listening to hours of great content provided by this show! There it is! 5 Stars!!!

Fine! From across the pond....5 Stars!
I could start with nothing but glowing compliments and champagne to these Brits from across the pond. I say nay. I give you a solid ‘Merica!!! Funny. Educated. On topic (and off which is the best fun). Just Ultimately fun. Dan (Host with a straight forward strategy opinion and cranky Dad approach) and Phil (hobby friendly plus Dan’s sad hilarious brother) literally becomes one of the most addictive listens in any 40k podcast. 5 Stars. Love you kids. Sunny Florida Jason!

The Warhammer treat that can’t be beat!
Fantastic show every single time! I work nights at a hospital here in the U.S. and with so much going on in the world, this show is a welcome break in troubled times. A group of guys who love the game, and are obviously great friends, covering every aspect of Warhammer while not being afraid to give each other a little guff along the way. I’ve enjoyed every single episode, and look forward to the notification that a new episode has posted to listen to while working. Keep up the good work gentlemen and please keep the banter and joking with each other coming!

    A taste of home.
I recently got back into the hobby after a 15(ish) year break and found this show after buying a couple of Phil’s internal sponsons for my Kreig tanks. Great dynamic between the three hosts (when Joe can be bothered to turn up). I am from the UK originally and moved to the US a few years ago and this show, with the banter and often meandering segments really do remind me of home and having similar chats with friends over a few pints. Love the work and please keep it up! The Emperor protects.
  • Plainshow
    Amazing!
Look Out Sir! is a superior podcast with an amazing host! Joe is a charming, charismatic, brilliantly funny personality, crescendoing to greater and more prolific heights of entertainment talent with every show. Listening to such a meteoric rise of burgeoning talent, during my lifetime, is a singularly humbling and wonderful pleasure! Joe’s voice will split your sides with laughter, take you down paths of quiet contemplation, send you spiraling through a whirlwind of his beautiful intellect, and make you choke back tears from his overwhelming compassion and empathy. Joe is so staggeringly resplendent at times, that he had to add some others to give you a brief respite between his peerless soliloquies; they’re ok too.

The Joe Rogan Experience of 40k
Just without the Rogan, so it's the Joe Experience of 40k; and one truly does experience Joe on this podcast. This is an excellent podcast for keeping up with 40k happenings. The hosts aren't journalists rereading community articles, but veteran players and hobbyists with their own unique insights. More importantly, they will sit though hours of GW live-streams so you don't have to. The only real criticism I have is that their insights can sometimes be a bit naive. For example, they seem to think the changes to matched play missions represent GW writing rules for ITC, and not ITC's rules being copied over to and encroaching on normal matched play. On the other hand, it is good to have a bit of optimism. All together, an excellent podcast.

One of the top podcasts in the Imperium!
This podcast, which seems to have an incorrect name on iTunes for some strange reason (servitors just aren't what they use to be), is titled Phil's Fantastic 40k Guard Hour. Often inviting his friends Joe and Dan, Phil discusses the amazingness that is the Astra Militarum, Krieg, and all things Imperium. Joe and Dan commonly interject about cool rules and such that aren't as interesting to talk about as the Guard and it's mighty ranks of devout soldiers, but still mildly interesting. I hear something about Ultramarines form time to time. Cool. Whatever. But never as amazing as Phil's Marauder Bomber, custom Daemon host (not heretical at all... I saw an Inquisitor keeping it reigned in while on the battlefield with my own eyes; it is an agent of chaos turned against chaos by the Emperor's light!), and Death Riders! Phil only let's us down during his brief moments talking about his Minotaur army, but worry not listeners! Phil gets right back to it with his Quad Launchers and Leman Russes to obliterate the enemies of Mankind in maximum glory! If you're looking for the best hobbying and Astra Militarum podcast in the entire Imperium, look no further! Sarge is here to tell you this is your one stop, just like the Commissar's tent when you think you may have experienced doubt for a split second on the battlefield! So give Phil's Fantastic 40k Guard Hour a listen. You can't be disappointed (if your faith is strong). If you are disappointed or notice disappointment in a fellow squad member, please report the experience to your regimental Commissar's tent after completing an iTLOS40k digital report form to receive corrective action! Cadia Stands and the Emperor Protects!

    Audio quality
Audio quality is trash. Content is repetitive. Sound effects are laughable or non existent, some of the profanity bleeps scare the crap out of me when I’m driving. Not recommended.
