Who Was Prince?

179

Who Was Prince? is the ultimate look at the greatest and most mysterious musician of the modern era. Prince was a genius singer, songwriter, guitarist, and performer but how did he create so much music, what was he like as a person, what was his childhood like? This eight episode series is built on interviews with people who were close to him—people who played in his bands, managed his career, engineered his music, or dated him. We explore his multiple personalities, his love of basketball, his insane work ethic, his ability to play almost every instrument, his love of clothes, his turbulent childhood where he left his parents, his romantic life, his baby who died after a few days, and his tragic end. We hear stories about Prince and Liz Taylor, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and many more. This is a deep look inside the life of an unforgettable man.

This was great! Brought me right into the time and the experience.

    Shallow Part 2
I have to agree with the Shallow reviewer. There were some good segments but for the most part it comes across as a bad episode of VH1’s Behind the Music. Especially the last episode which was more conspiracy / conjecture than fact. I was really looking forward to this after having exhausted all other Prince related podcasts (which there are far too few of) but if you love Prince, this is not the place for you. Even if you’re a casual fan I’d steer clear as you might come away with a less than true image of his work.

    Enjoyed
Really appreciate all the research and stories of how much he changed the music industry and those who worked with him and got to know him as a regular person. But the last interview with Jermaine Dupri was painful to get through.. he seemed so clueless about Prince ‘s earlier music and came across as a smug immature overly impressed with himself idiot .

    So Good
This is incredibly well done and fascinating from start to finish.

    Most comprehensive ever
Great series, told from the people who knew him best. I learned quite a bit of the behind the sceness stuff. Most compelling was the last episode, learning details of his death. I could have done without the Jermaine Dupri episode, but hey....I understand sponships. It was worth it to get all the Prince knowledge. RIP Prince...long live the Purple One.

    Shallow
This is a shallow, indulgent, drool fest. You don’t honor someone by gushing over them, whilst hijacking the experience of knowing him, to gain attention for yourself. It dishonors the person Prince was. It’s a bunch of people pretending they knew him. Anyone who really knows someone, doesn’t talk about them the way these sycophants ramble on...

Love learning more about the king
Being a Minnesota transplant, the love for prince is infectious in the Bold North. I’ve always loved his music but my passion has of course grown since moving to the twin cities. Learning behind the scenes info is so cool. Love hearing the great stories and quirks of this forever legend!

    Honoring the Man
Toure, You have done a respectful retrospective of one of my favorite artists of all time. It is evident that you have great love and respect for him as well in that you present him to the best of your ability, warts and all, as lovingly as if he were a dear member of your family. I have learned so much about music, the music industry, of which I know next to nothing, through your interviews with the people behind the scenes. Really fascinating stuff. Much obliged, Cristina

Enjoyable but could use some editing
I’m learning a lot about Prince; very interesting podcast and it’s great to hear directly from the people in his world. However it can be repetitive, could use a little tighter editing.

    Prince was truly a Prince
Thank you for this podcast. The episodes tell of a life truly fulfilled by Prince as told by those that grew up with him and was there through thick and thin. What he left the world was his musical soul. Forever thankful.

Brilliant & Entertaining.... just like him
As a born and raised Minnesotan, I have seen and heard so many things about Prince. This is a phenomenally produced podcast with awesome stories from those that REALLY knew him. Thank you!

Love Prince, but not the guy doing this podcast.
Terrible podcast, jumps around, repeats quotes endlessly, touts his connection to Prince more than Prince. Boo. And I was really looking forward to learning about this musical genius.

    Always something new about Prince
Love to hear the stories behind my favorite musician/performer.

    Thank You Toure
I’ve always been described as Prince like or having a Prince vibe. Truthfully he is one of my top three favorite artist, but I’ve only known him through song and Dave Chapelle, never much about him as a person. I love this podcast and I’m glad it exists I find myself learning more about my who I am. I’m 29 and building my life asymmetrical to what I’ve known over the generations. I admire Prince, I appreciate the humanizing, it makes my journey feel more livable. I didn’t realize how much I shared with Prince far as family background in the sense of plurality in my consciousness. Thank you Toure! - @iamazeem19

    Check out MPR’s podcast series
Too much Toure, not enough Prince. The MPR-produced podcasts are much better.

    Must listen
Prince was my first (and longest-lasting) musical love. His death hit me harder than that of anyone I didn’t know personally. For all his success he remained elusive, a truly complex person. Can’t wait to hear the rest of this excellent series.
