    Music explorer!
I love learning about music! Especially from people who are passionate about all things music. DJs to music are like a photo to the album, their ability to catalogue and pull the song that you didn’t know you need to hear amazes me. This pod is gives the ability to peek into their process. Janice is a fantastic interviewer and I love her enthusiastic voice, curiosity, joy and excitement for music and the DJS she interviews. It is palpable!

    Too much woke and latin….
KEXP’s vibe and intent has drifted considerably the last few years. Too much focus on Latin X stuff which is a made up thing. In the Latin language, there is male and female in the beautiful language. Keep our culture…..

    Different Format
I would love to hear the full songs instead of just clips.

    HEY KEXP
Can you please bring back the old format?

Make something with older music called free music

Song of the Day, why’d you kill it?
Song of the Day was such a refreshing podcast! It was just a new, full song everyday, without analysis, for me to listen to and think of on my own, without interpretation. I could hear a whole song by a new artist I’d never heard before, and if I liked it, find it on streaming, etc to hear more. Recently (March 2024) KEXP replaced Song of the Day with In Our Headphones, a show with a completely different format. It’s now 95% conversation with KEXP DJs, with only 30s snippets of the music they’re talking about. The snippets are so short, and make the listen a waste. Even if you like the song they’re talking about, unless you take notes or go back and read the show notes, you won’t even pickup on the new artist they play. It’s a real bummer. In Our Headphones is a decent show, if they’d only play more of the songs, and make it more of a showcase for the music itself, not the DJs. Maybe if they’d made it its own separate new thing, but replacing Song of the Day was a mistake…

    Love the series
I’ve recently discovered ‘In Our Headphones’ and give it a big thumbs up. Part of my interest in KEXP podcasts is the commentary you offer as you introduce your audience to music. I have limited knowledge in the music scene, so I am always interested in the side stories about the artist or their background to help get more from their music. This formula of hosting the DJs is a winner, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening and discovering.I appreciate your commitment to quality podcasts!

    Chin up
Keep your chin up. Folks take a while to come around. The format is on point and the music is delivering. Loved the “honorable mention” from Miss Ashley. Y’all should keep that piece/make it standard across the episodes. Overall - y’all rip! Don’t sweat the trolls

    Burnt 20 years of goodwill
Fumbled! Could have started a new podcast feed for this instead of burning dedicated listeners of the old one. The ratio of talking to music is too high, & an actual radio station should know better. Such a shame!
  • this guy....
    great music exploration!
appreciate the new music recs, and hearing folks who really know their stuff recommend songs and talk all things music, and get to know the kexp djs on a deeper level!!
  • me_forever0
    really nice show
came away with a few new songs to listen to, and made me excited about finding new music on my own. i love hearing people who are passionate about music talk about why they like a song - having the song playing throughout was a nice touch. will definitely keep tuning in!

New show isn’t at all as good as the old
Lacking normal KEXP depth, curation and delivery. I’m sure Janice is nice, but she comes off as very amateur, insincere and fake cheery. The smattering of info on the artists and the tiny sound clips don’t do it for me. I’m all for change and updating, but these are like watching a trailer, not an episode. Also, others already do this type of format and do it much better. Swing and a miss. UPDATE: I’m changing my review from 2 stars to one. Nobody likes this show. I don’t believe any of the positive reviews posted lately and you shouldn’t either.

    Meh
New pod is ok. Not nearly as good as Song of the Day, but I have gotten some good stuff from it already. I just have to go and listen to it myself. I do find myself skipping through the convo, though. And you have to stop using the word “journey”

Love hearing about music from real music lovers
This podcast has a depth of conversation about music — meta conversation — that could only happen between people who live and breathe music within the industry. I absolutely love hearing from people like the hosts. Janice, whose music writing credits also go deep after decades at KEXP, brings some serious off-the-cuff knowledge to the table. Both hosts are great and this is a show that only KEXP could deliver as a truly independent radio station. it is also a great compliment to further exploring music on my own, which is something that as a music lover I actually also enjoy doing.

    Please play more music
I like the talk and the interviews, but there is far too little music. Please play the song for longer and throw in one or two full tracks.
  • AFD801
30 min podcast without even 3 minutes of music
I loved loved loved song of the day and was very hopeful for what this new format would bring. I think I’m unsubscribing from this podcast. What’s the point of talking about music if you’re not even going to play it?

I miss Song of the Day
I hope you can bring back Song of the Day. I miss the simplicity of the format and the ability to listen to the whole song. It was a great part of my morning routine, I listened every day. Please bring it back!
  • Lulusez
    not worth it anymore. Ugh
I have loved KEXP Song of the Day since inception. The new format is miserable. When you can only hear the small snippet of a song repeating the title, and one of the DJ's voices is absolutely unbearable (sorry), I unsubscribed immediately. I came back today and it is still impossible. I did like hearing the Latin music DJ speak about her new podcast, so maybe I will check that out. I'm surethere was a good reason for the change, but I am out, and for good.
  • Nerdboxer
    Navel gazing
Took a great way to discover music and made it no different than every other NPR music podcast. Twee and annoying. If you can’t play the full songs anymore, I’d rather you just play the snippets and call it a day, instead of this boring wrapping you’ve created.

    Thanks for the Memories
I've subscribed to Song of the Day by KEXP since 2006-07. It was a daily dose of fun, interesting music by unknown, off-the-path bands that were up-and-coming. Even when the music was not that great you could bet that by next week a different DJ would send something you would enjoy. I've saved hundreds of songs from this podcast to listen to over the years. I understand why the change had to happen (getting rights to play full songs is now a lot of money they can no longer afford), but the snippets are unbearable. I understand interviewing the DJs and it would be cool to get to know the people who chose the music I've enjoyed for almost two decades, but I'm not going to listen exclusively for that. Thanks for the great memories and music. I'm sad it's come to an end.

    Feels like commercial radio UGGHHH
Stumbled upon a gold mine over a decade ago. I could listen to the songs on my time, I discovered new artists, bought their music
  • Stu Pidass
    Nope
I was sad when KEXP got rid of the weekly new music playlist, but was still glad that I at least got a new song each day in its entirety. Now even that is gone. I want to listen to music. Uninterrupted music. I don’t care how the DJ came to like the song or how it affects them. I don’t need to hear endless conversation about how the music touched them. I just want to hear the songs. This podcast used to be great because it was a nice break from my talking podcasts. You are KEXP, not NPR (nothing against NPR, though). Just play the music. That’s what your entire station is all about. I will happily resubscribe if you go back to simply playing music.
  • Phriapatius
    Ruined a good thing
I’ll give it a week to bring back the old format or I’ll unsubscribe. They could make a new podcast for the DJs to talk instead of playing music.
  • whydoIneedanicknamejustasking
    Play full songs?
I have been a huge fan of the song of the day for years - really loved listening to a new song every morning. I understand you want the DJs to provide more context around the songs they are picking, but I wish that in the new format you’d let them play the entire song, not just talk about the songs and play a small snippet. That way - those of us that just want to experience the new songs can still listen to them in full. With this new format, I’ll probably unsubscribe, as for me the joy was listening to music, not talking.
  • ptaill
    Change it back!
Some reviews have it summed up the exact way I feel. They made this about the DJs and not the music. Snippets instead of full tracks. One of the hosts sounds disingenuous and fake, almost like “influencer speak”. After years of being a daily listener I am unsubscribing.
  • witty pseudonym
What if… we got rid of everything you liked?
I originally subscribed because I liked getting to hear new music, and just music. Now they’ve completely gotten rid of that, in favor of 99% people monologuing with the occasional 5 second clip. If you’ve listened to any other ‘music’ podcast, you know what I mean. Music-less, boring, I’m out.
  • gartyee
    Don’t like this new format
Been listening to this podcast for years and really have appreciated being introduced to a lot of new music. But now, I’ll probably unsubscribe if this new format remains.
  • FragrantLime
    Not liking the new format
Not really digging the new format. I really hate just hearing snippets of the songs instead of a full song every day. That was kind of the point of listening to this. I can just listen to the many NPR podcasts that I already do for this kind of thing and they will play full songs.
  • MacGyver_Squatch
    Full Songs Please
I typically love all things KEXP (especially the music obviously)... While the idea for the change from song of the day to "In Our Headphones" seems like it could be interesting, my immediate reaction after hearing the first episode is I would really like to hear the full versions of the songs instead of short previews. As of episode 1, this podcast primarily features discussions about what the KEXP crew is listening to with short clips of each song that fade in and out. Let's hear those full songs please!
  • Mr hostetter
    Nope
They went and made it about the DJs instead of the songs. Terrible narcissistic mistake. Getting those songs and learning about new artists and then going on and purchasing more of their music is gone. There are dozens of storytelling podcasts on itunes and I don't need to hear your DJs tell theirs..... I'll give this about a week and unsubscribe. Thanks for ruining a good thing for ego purposes.....
  • spacechem
    Ugh!
What happened? II can understand that radio- especially internet radio- is a difficult business model and can't afford to pay much, but this Janice person is the worst! Maybe, in a year or so,when she gets to highschool, she can learn to talk like an adult...
  • Morgan Laura
    It used to be perfect
And now it’s full of unnecessary ad-like voices… I’ll wait for April 15th to see what all the changes are, and may unsubscribe after that… Such a shame…

    Great podcast
If you like good, non mainstream, independent, “college” music, this is the best place to be. I listen to new music all week long and nothing comes close to KEXP in delivering the best of new fresh music. I have saved hundreds of songs over the years and this would be what I take with me to the proverbial desert island.
